How this calculator figures it
Stud counts place one stud every 16 inches on center plus an end stud (IRC R602.3 standard spacing), then add framing for corners and openings explicitly. Plates run three times the wall length — one bottom, doubled top — and sheathing divides wall area by the 32 square feet of a 4×8 sheet. Stud height limits follow IRC Table R602.3(5).
How it works
Worked example — a 12 × 8 ft wall at 16" on center with two corners: ceil(144 ÷ 16) + 1 = 10 field studs plus 4 corner studs; plates run 36 linear feet (three 16-ft 2×4s); and 96 sq ft of wall takes 3 sheets of 4×8 sheathing.

16" OC is the load-bearing standard under IRC R602.3; 24" OC is allowed in limited cases — top story / lighter loads per Table R602.3(5).
Why are precut studs 92-5/8 inches?
Three plates plus 92-5/8 gives a finished 8-ft ceiling with drywall.
How many studs per foot?
